Loads of times but we always get the same response "we cannot guarantee that our food isn't nut free". I am convinced that insurance companies now insist this should be the response to avoid court cases against restaurants they insure!

Yeah, it's really frustrating. Ridiculously enough, one of the best (I mean best as in safest) places I eat in is McDonald's! All their food is the same wherever you go in the UK, and their website gives very detailed ingredient information.
