nut allergy 'challenge' - 2006/08/16 16:29
Has anyone been re tested for a nut allergy? It was called a 'challenge', but I'm not sure if it still is. My daughter had an anaphylactic shock 6 years ago, and wants to be re tested, but we are not yet sure what is involved. Any stories of this experience would be a great help. Thanks Katie xx

i know it is now ages after you wrote the thing, but i hope this is helpful,- i am 12 and have a mega severe nut allergy, this was proved 6 months ago (for the umpteenth time) in a nut challenge test. this is a simple procedure that starts with a skin prick test, a test where a small amount of water with a miniscule extract of nut protein is put on your arm, then your arm is pricked so that some of the solution goes into you. it produces (if you are allergic) a hive which the doctors mesure a certian amount of time later to see if you are allergic and if so how severly. if you do not get a hive from this or only get a really little one then you go on to the next stage. i do not know much about this cause i didn't get any farther but anyway...whereby you are exposed to actual nuts, not yet anywhere near your mouth, and moniterd closely for any sign of a reaction for several hours. then in a very slow progression the nuts are brought closer and closer to your mouth until you are actually eating small amounts of nuts and then larger amounts. if a reaction of any sort is detected within the several hours of monitering between each stage then the doctors stop and caculate how bad the allergy is. if there is no reaction then the patient is not allergic to nuts. i have to go to bed now but i hope that's useful.
