My child's school was really understanding and placed a photo of her so the dinner ladies could easily identify her and not allow her anything with nuts in during dinner time. Although one dinner lady finds it a real 'drag' when my daughter asks if something has nuts in. She obciously doesn't understand the full implication of the allergy.

I seem to be having great difficulty in getting through to my daughter's school how life threatening her nut allergy is. After one serious reaction last year (where they failed to even give her antihistamine and called me back to collect her), a meeting with the school nurse and several letters since they still don't seem to understand. My daughters allergy is a very serious one (the consultant said she was a-typical and had never seen anthing like it when we last attended a skin prick test) and I am at a loss what to do next. If anyone has got any ideas or has had a similar problem please let me know. Thanks.

I'm sorry to say that I'm really not surprised by the reaction you are getting from your daughter's school. I have heard many stories telling more or less the same thing!
I was very lucky with my daughter's primary school. They had photos up of all allergic children listing each of the allergies, so they were easily recognisable. My daughter also got to sit at her own table, as she was the only child in her year with a nut allergy, but was able to choose a friend who had a 'nut free' lunchbox to sit with her. It was amazing how many children would ask their mums not to put anything nutty in their lunch box so they could sit with my daughter!
Sadly, when my daughter moved to junior school at the age of 7, this all changed. I actually had a bit of an argument with the headteacher on an induction evening when she told me they did nothing to monitor allergic children in their school canteen and that it was down to the children to make sure that they weren't put in danger. My daughter became very worried about going to a school where noone would know that she had a nut allergy, as they don't have photos up in their school canteen. I have to say, that at 7 years old, it's a big responsibilty for a child to make sure they are always away from nuts. And not always possible if tables aren't cleaned between each sitting.
The headmistress said that their school policy was just to have epi pens available for allergic children. They actually hold 2 for my daughter-one in the canteen and one in the office. I decided that the only way I could feel slightly happier about the situation was to invest in a 'medic alert' bracelet which my daughter wears at all times. It is bright red so not easy to miss, and I rely on that and her friends to raise the alarm in a crisis. My daughter has packed lunches too so I know what goes in there.
I did raise a concern recently with the school though after the healthy eating campaign kicked in. Many of the 'healthier' snacks contain nuts or nut traces, and I was concerned about traces being left on a table. Sadly, it seems I was the only parent with this concern, so nothing was done. Apparently the situation was being 'considered'.
I'm sorry that I don't have any bright ideas to help your situation. I would just keep making yourself known at the school until something gets done. I know it's not a nice way to do things, but unfortunatley, sometimes it's the only way anything will ever get done.
Good luck!!!
